Why Your AI Agent Has More Access Than Your Interns
Let me describe two onboarding processes. Tell me which one sounds more responsible.
New hire onboarding:
- Background check before day one
- Scoped access to relevant repositories only
- No production database access for 90 days
- Code reviews required on every pull request
- Mentor assigned, weekly check-ins
- Gradual permission escalation based on demonstrated competence
AI agent onboarding:
- Install package
- Paste API key into environment variable
- Full filesystem access
- Full shell execution access
- Full network access
- Zero oversight
One of these entities has a resume, references, and legal accountability. The other is a statistical model that occasionally hallucinates file paths. Guess which one gets root-level access on day one.
The Absurd Double Standard
In any organization with basic security practices, a new employee does not get admin access to everything on their first day. You would not give an intern sudo privileges. You would not give a contractor access to your production database without a review process. You would not give a new developer the ability to push directly to main without code review.
These are not controversial policies. They are baseline security hygiene. Principle of least privilege. Trust is earned incrementally.
Now look at what happens when you install an AI coding agent.
The agent can read any file your user can read. It can write to any path your user can write to. It can execute any command your shell can execute. It can make network requests to any destination your system can reach.
Your SSH keys? Readable. Your .env files? Readable. Your AWS credentials in ~/.aws/credentials? Readable. Your production database connection strings? Readable.
The agent has not proven itself. It has no track record. It has no accountability. And it has more access to your system than a human who went through a three-round interview process.
Clawdbot leaked 1.5 million API keys in under a month. That is what happens when you give untested entities unrestricted access.
"But the Agent Needs Access to Do Its Job"
Yes. So does the intern. The intern also needs access to repositories, build tools, and development environments. The difference is that you scope what the intern can reach.
The intern needs to edit source code. So you give them write access to the source directory. Not to the infrastructure configuration. Not to the secrets vault. Not to the deployment pipeline.
Your AI agent also needs to edit source code. So give it write access to the source directory. Not to .env. Not to .ssh. Not to /etc. Not to everything.
This is not a radical proposal. It is the same principle of least privilege you already apply to humans. The only question is why you are not applying it to software that is objectively less trustworthy than a human.
The Trust Hierarchy Makes No Sense
Here is how most organizations implicitly rank trust:
- Senior engineers: Full access (earned over years)
- Junior engineers: Scoped access (expanded gradually)
- Contractors: Limited access (expires automatically)
- Interns: Minimal access (supervised work)
- AI agents: Full access (lol)
An intern who deletes a production database gets fired. A contractor who leaks credentials gets sued. A senior engineer who bypasses security protocols gets investigated.
An AI agent that exfiltrates your API keys to an unknown server? Nothing happens to it. It does not care. It is not capable of caring. It will do the same thing again tomorrow if you let it.
The entities you trust the least should have the least access. Currently, they have the most.
What Scoped AI Agent Access Looks Like

Review the logs. Does the agent need access to anything your policy currently denies? Add a rule. Is the agent trying to do things it should not? Your policy is working.
When you are satisfied with the agent's behavior patterns, switch to enforcement mode. Probation over. Access scoped. Trust verified.
The Performance Review
In any reasonable organization, access is reviewed periodically. Does this person still need access to this system? Has their role changed? Should permissions be adjusted?
